Velociraptor

Forget the man-sized movie monster. As a real Velociraptor you would be about the size of a turkey, wrapped in feathers and picking your way across the sand dunes of Cretaceous Mongolia.

A small hunter in a dry land

You live around 75–71 million years ago in what is now the Gobi Desert. The landscape is arid: dune fields, scrub and seasonal streams, with occasional sandstorms. Your neighbours include the beaked plant-eater Protoceratops, the oviraptorid Citipati and early mammals and lizards.

Fully grown, you are roughly 1.5–2 metres long, most of it tail, stand about half a metre at the hip and weigh around 15 kilograms. Your skull is long and low, with an upturned snout and serrated teeth. Life here follows the seasons. Water is scarce for much of the year, so animals gather at streams and oases, and that is where a small predator finds its chances. Studies of related raptors’ eye sockets hint at good low-light vision, so dawn and dusk may have been your busiest hours.

Feathers and a famous claw

A Velociraptor forearm bone carries quill knobs – the attachment points for large wing feathers seen in modern birds. So you had proper feathered arms, even though you could not fly. On each foot, the second toe bore an enlarged, curved claw held off the ground while walking.

That claw was probably used to pin down and hold struggling prey, the way hawks and eagles do, rather than to slash open large animals. You likely ate whatever you could overpower or scavenge; one specimen has a piece of pterosaur bone in its gut.

Frozen mid-fight

In 1971 a Polish–Mongolian expedition found the Fighting Dinosaurs: a Velociraptor with its claw in the throat of a Protoceratops, whose beak clamps the raptor’s arm. Both were buried together, probably by a collapsing dune or sandstorm. It is one of the few fossils that captures a predator and its prey in the act.
