Medieval nun

As a nun you would give up marriage and property for a life of prayer behind convent walls – and gain something many medieval women never had: education, and sometimes real authority.

Why enter a convent?

Women entered religious life for many reasons: genuine vocation, family strategy, widowhood, or the wish to avoid marriage. Daughters of noble and wealthy families were often placed in convents as children, and a convent usually expected a dowry, so nunneries were heavily aristocratic. Poorer women more often served as lay sisters doing manual work, or lived as beguines – semi-religious women who shared a house without taking permanent vows.

Inside the walls

Nuns followed rules such as that of St Benedict, praying the Divine Office through day and night, working, reading and keeping silence at set times. From the papal decree Periculoso of 1298, strict enclosure – never leaving the convent – was demanded for nuns, though it was enforced unevenly. Convents ran schools for girls, cared for the sick, produced textiles and embroidery, and some had scriptoria where nuns copied and illuminated manuscripts.

An abbess could be a major figure: she managed estates, tenants and income, and in some places held the status of a feudal lord. Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179), abbess of Rupertsberg, wrote on theology, medicine and natural science, composed music still performed today and corresponded with popes and emperors.

Nuns in Poland

Among the earliest Polish convents was the Norbertine house at Zwierzyniec in Kraków, from the 12th century. Saint Hedwig of Silesia (Jadwiga Śląska), a duchess, supported the Cistercian convent at Trzebnica founded in 1202 and spent her widowhood there. The Poor Clares at Stary Sącz were founded by St Kinga, who became their nun after her husband’s death. These houses lasted for centuries as centres of devotion, education and estate management.
