Coal miner

As a 20th-century miner you would ride a cage hundreds of metres down into the dark, work a shift by lamplight, and come up black with coal dust.

Down the shaft

Coal powered the 20th century: it fuelled steelworks, power stations, railways and home stoves. Miners descended by cage to depths that, in places like Upper Silesia, often reached several hundred metres and in some mines more than 1,000. Early in the century much coal was cut with picks and loaded by hand; mechanisation brought pneumatic drills, cutters and conveyors, and from mid-century longwall shearers that sliced along a long coal face supported by hydraulic props.

Work was organised in shifts around the clock. Heat, dust, noise and cramped spaces were constant companions, and carbide or electric cap lamps replaced earlier flame lamps. Mining towns grew around the shafts, with company housing, clubs and sports teams.

Dangers below

Mining was among the most dangerous jobs of the century. Methane, called firedamp, could explode; coal dust could amplify an explosion into a disaster; roofs collapsed; water flooded workings. The worst single mining disaster, at Benxihu in China in 1942, killed over 1,500 people. Long-term, miners breathed dust that caused pneumoconiosis, ‘black lung’, a chronic, often fatal disease. The traditional caged canary, used in Britain until 1986, warned of carbon monoxide.

Pride and protest in Silesia

In Poland mining formed a strong identity, especially in Silesia: the black ceremonial uniform with a plumed cap, brass bands, and St Barbara’s Day on 4 December, honouring the miners’ patron saint. Under communism miners were celebrated as heroes of labour and given relatively high pay and privileges. They also became central to resistance. On 16 December 1981, after martial law was declared, security forces shot striking miners at the Wujek mine in Katowice, killing nine.
