Respawn Roulette

Cryo-sleep passenger

As a passenger waking from long-haul sleep you would open your eyes after months of travel – stiff, confused and, if today’s science is any guide, not actually frozen.

Frozen solid is not on the table

Science fiction loves people frozen in ice, but freezing destroys human tissue: ice crystals rupture cells. Cryonics companies preserve bodies after legal death in the hope of future revival, but no one has ever been revived, and mainstream science considers it unproven. Researchers can vitrify, glass-like freeze, small tissues and embryos; whole-organ cryopreservation is still experimental, though in 2023 researchers reported transplanting vitrified and rewarmed rat kidneys that worked.

What space agencies actually study is torpor: a reduced metabolic state, closer to hibernation than to freezing.

Lessons from bears and hospitals

Many animals hibernate. Bears can spend months in their dens with greatly reduced metabolism and lose surprisingly little bone or muscle – a trick that would solve two big problems of spaceflight. In hospitals, therapeutic hypothermia cools patients by a few degrees for a day or several days after cardiac arrest to protect the brain.

ESA and NASA-funded studies have explored whether a hibernation-like state could cut a crew’s food, water and oxygen needs, shrink habitat size and perhaps reduce psychological strain on a voyage to Mars. Some research also suggests torpor might offer partial protection against radiation, though this is unconfirmed in humans.

Waking up (speculation)

No human has been kept in torpor for weeks, so this is guesswork. Waking would probably be gradual, supervised by automated medical systems. Expect muscle weakness, low blood pressure on sitting up, confusion and a long recovery – something like coming round after a long stay in intensive care. If you slept the whole way, your first job on arrival might simply be learning to walk again.
