Asteroid miner

As an asteroid miner you would work on a rock so small that a careless jump could launch you into orbit around it – or away from it for good.

What is out there

Asteroids are leftovers from the formation of the solar system, mostly orbiting in the belt between Mars and Jupiter, with thousands of near-Earth asteroids passing closer. Some are rich in metals such as iron, nickel and platinum-group elements; others, the carbonaceous types, contain water bound in minerals and organic compounds.

Most experts think water would be the first valuable product, not gold. Split into hydrogen and oxygen, it could become rocket propellant and breathable air, sold in space so ships would not have to haul every litre up from Earth’s deep gravity well.

What robots have already done

Sample-return missions have shown the technology is possible on a small scale. Japan’s Hayabusa2 returned about 5.4 grams from asteroid Ryugu in 2020, and NASA’s OSIRIS-REx delivered about 121.6 grams from Bennu in 2023. When OSIRIS-REx touched Bennu, its surface behaved almost like a ball pit, and the spacecraft sank in before firing its thrusters to back away.

NASA’s Psyche mission, launched in 2023, is heading to a metal-rich asteroid of the same name, due to arrive in 2029.

A shift on the rock (speculation)

Gravity on a small asteroid is so weak that you could not walk; you and your machines would need anchors, harpoons or nets to stay attached. Most work would probably be done by robots, with human crews supervising from a nearby craft, repairing equipment and dealing with surprises. Radiation, isolation and dust that clings to everything would be daily hazards. Under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty no nation can claim a celestial body, but US and Luxembourg laws passed in 2015 and 2017 say companies may own resources they extract – a legal question still being debated internationally.
